Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office EOW: Sunday, June 24, 1973 Cause: Gunfire
Deputy George McMurren was shot and killed while attempting to locate a suspected poacher who was known to the deputy. Deputy McMurren was standing on the top of a hill and shining his light towards the suspect’s location. The suspect, a former sharpshooter for the Marine Corps, shot Deputy McMurren in the chest using the light from the flashlight as a point of reference.
The suspect was apprehended and sentenced to life in prison.
Deputy McMurren had served with the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office for 14 years. He was survived by his wife, seven children, 15 grandchildren, and 16 great grandchildren.
